The newly built wastewater treatment plant in Gjakova, Kosovo, is part of a series of new wastewater treatment plants being built across several locations in the country.
Growing challenges concerning lack of water in the country have given rise to new initiatives and projects to improve these conditions for the future, considering that less than 1% of all wastewater is being treated in Kosovo. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo has thus stressed the importance of wastewater reuse to reduce pollution while improving water use efficiency.
Until now, the absence of proper wastewater treatment protocols means that the wastewater is discharged directly into the rivers, resulting in a major contamination threat.
With the transition of implementing wastewater treatment plants, the foundation for the future is underway, moving towards much more sustainable conditions.
Implementing the water management conditions of the future naturally involves UV disinfection as a vital part of the plant, to improve water quality and reliability, while minimizing environmental impact. Choosing UV was therefore perfectly matched for the WWTP, utilizing chemical-free innovative technology.
In collaboration with the company Passavant Energy & Environment, the following Open Channel SS UV systems were installed at the WWTP:
The 2 Open Channel systems are now actively disinfecting wastewater of 60% UVT (UV Transmittance) with a flow rate of 760 m3/h. The systems consists of high-grade electropolished stainless steel AISI316L, being hydraulically optimized through vigorous simulation processes.
Implementing UV as a part of the treatment process offers the ability to protect against chlorine-resistant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, increasing the biosecurity measures significantly.
This includes the automated ULTRAWIPER™ quartz sleeve wiping technology, which ensures a stable disinfection process, while the convenient top compartment guarantees minimal maintenance requirements. The 2 systems will now ensure low operational costs for many years to come.
