UV DISINFECTION AND HORTICULTURE

Adequate water treatment for horticulture is crucial as it is directly related to healthy crops. UV treatment is ideal for this application as it is a completely clean technology that introduces no chemicals or unwanted disinfection by-products into the water. UV disinfection can be used for the disinfection of the water source from rainwater or surface water.

Horticulture UV systems are typically installed on outlet pipe systems from water storage tanks or on pipe systems for tank water recirculation. ULTRAAQUA UV systems are able to penetrate the outer membrane of microbes and damage their DNA essentially killing them. The same appears to be true for plant pests and their eggs; the smaller the pest the more susceptible they generally are to be inactivated by UVC rays.

ULTRAAQUA UV systems continuously disinfect water used for both soil-based and soil-less plant cultivation in greenhouses. The main microbial challenge organisms in greenhouse water include fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Erysiphales (mildew), bacteria such as Clavibacter, and viruses such as tomato bronze (wilt) virus and tomato mosaic virus, and larger microbes such as powdery mildew.
