FRESHWATER AQUARIUM IN MALAYSIA
Operating under Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), the National Science Centre (Pusat Sains Negara, PSN) at Bukit Kiara in Kuala Lumpur promotes public understanding of science and technology through interactive galleries and exhibits.
Among them is a large freshwater aquarium showcasing fish species found in Malaysia’s tropical rivers. As part of a wider refurbishment, PSN planned to improve the water quality in this aquarium.
WHAT THE CLIENT NEEDED
IMPROVED WATER QUALITY & CLARITY
Water clarity is central to any display aquarium, as it determines how well visitors can see the fish and their habitat. At PSN, the water in the fish display area was very cloudy, severely limiting visibility.
The refurbished water treatment system therefore needed to deliver a marked improvement in water quality and clarity. This called for a dedicated UV disinfection stage for the aquarium water.
THE SOLUTION
CHEMICAL-FREE UV DISINFECTION
In collaboration with Hydro Nusantara, a single UV system was sized for the aquarium, with a flow of 75 m³/h at 90% UVT. This led to the installation of an MR4-350PP UV system to inactivate bacteria, viruses, and algae, without adding chemicals to the water.
The system features a durable, UV-stabilized polypropylene reactor and an ULTRATOUCH™ control cabinet. It is also equipped with automated ULTRAWIPER™ cleaning, which keeps the quartz sleeves free of deposits to maintain UV output while reducing routine maintenance.
Since the UV system was put into operation, the aquarium water has gone from very cloudy to exceptionally clear, and the fish and their habitat can now be seen in detail.
