ABOUT THE CLIENT

DRINKING WATER FACILITY IN SPAIN

The Tossa-Lloret de Mar DWTP is located at the Tordera drinking water treatment plant in Barcelona, Spain, which supplies municipal drinking water.

As part of upgrading its treatment line, the plant set out to add an ultraviolet disinfection barrier to the existing process.

WHAT THE CLIENT NEEDED

A COMPACT DISINFECTION STEP

UV disinfection is well established at the outlet of wastewater plants, but in Spain it is still less common in drinking water applications. The plant wanted the benefit of this technology, consisting of an additional barrier against chlorine-resistant pathogens, without altering the water’s characteristics or generating by-products.

The main challenge was not the process but the space. The filter hall and pipe gallery left very little room for new equipment, and the UV stage had to be integrated into the existing pipework without any refurbishment works. The available space therefore dictated the equipment selection, calling for UV technology that could deliver the required disinfection capacity from a much smaller footprint than a conventional low-pressure installation.

THE SOLUTION

MEDIUM-PRESSURE UV ON EXISTING PIPEWORK

In collaboration with ASAP Servicios Técnicos, who supplied, installed and commissioned the project, 9x ULTRATRON MP2-2500SS medium-pressure UV reactors were installed at the plant in February 2025.

A medium-pressure lamp emits a polychromatic spectrum at a very high-power density, concentrating in a single element the germicidal output that would require many more low-pressure lamps and considerably larger reactors. Where physical space is the limiting factor, this is what makes the installation possible, which is why medium pressure is routinely used in the retrofitting of existing municipal and industrial facilities. All nine reactors are equipped with automatic ULTRAWIPER™ quartz sleeve cleaning for streamlined maintenance.

The reactors were connected to the existing pipework via flanged connections, so each unit could be integrated without modifying the plant’s hydraulic layout. Each reactor is operated from its own independent ULTRATOUCH control cabinet with a touchscreen. Each unit was commissioned on site with lamp ignition checks, UV sensor signals verified, and the operating parameters adjusted. Plant staff were then trained in lamp replacement, in reading the UV intensity signal as an indicator of the delivered dose, and in the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment.

The nine ULTRATRON reactors now form an additional disinfection barrier in the plant’s drinking water treatment line, added without any changes to the existing hydraulic layout.
