Located in Nanping, Fujian Province in China, the largest land-based RAS eel system in the world has been built. The location is purposefully chosen as it is rich in natural resources, close to freshwater sources, with high air quality. The conditions provide the perfect natural conditions for RAS aquaculture, with the indoor farming environment enabling water saving of 5% makeup water.
The project marks a whole new chapter of eel aquaculture in China, utilizing advanced technology from both China and Europe while matching sustainability requirements to protect the environment. The Zehui Aquaculture eel project is fully supported by the local government, complying with the policies of protecting natural ecology to prevent water pollution.
The total budget allocated for the project is a substantial 268 million EUR, with the entire project covering an area of 0.53 square kilometers. The comprehensive project involves its very own industry chain, including RAS aquaculture, eel deep processing, feed production, logistics, and an R&D center.
The project was divided into 2 phases, with the first phase being to reach an annual production of 6.000 tons of eels, and the second phase to reach 15.000 tons of eels. The project involves a complete state-of-the-art RAS technology system from engineering, biology, and aquacultural environmental protection. This includes physical filtering, biological purification, and disinfection, to ensure excellent water quality for the eels to thrive.
To comply with the high requirements of this massive project, the facility has included a wide range of advanced equipment, including control and alarm systems, as well as water quality monitoring systems. Furthermore, automatic online monitoring allows control over temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, etc., combined with a database system to record and output all operation data, for test and analysis of the entire system operation. To accommodate these standards, it was obvious to include the best possible disinfection equipment on the market.
