The wellboat Grip Arctic is a fish carrier sailing under the flag of Chile, with a carrying capacity of 500 t DWT. As the vessel is transporting live fish, increased welfare regulations have made it a requirement to disinfect the water.
During the transport of fish ready for slaughter, the water needs to be disinfected after it has been in contact with the fish. Additionally, during smolt transport, the water needs to be disinfected both before and after it has been in contact with the smolt.
To meet the increased fish welfare regulations, a biosecurity upgrade was required for the wellboat. In this case, the exact requirements were to meet a disinfection protocol of a minimum EOLL (End of Lamp Lifetime) dose of 90mJ/cm2, following the previously mentioned disinfection conditions.
To comply with the Chilean fish welfare regulations, UV disinfection was utilized to ensure the defined biosecurity standards. Unlike wellboats without defined disinfection protocols, the high-quality disinfection processes will now exclude the risk of cross-contamination.
